We got a late start today.   What was a leisurely morning was extended when the electronic lock failed and it took the hotel maintenance 2 hours to open our room.  We got a free hotel room out of the deal.

We made up the time easily and today was the fastest ride of the tour.  We rode  47 miles at 16 mph.  I was helped by a nice 10 mph tailwind and a lighter load.  I sent all my camping and extra gear home by FedEx on Thursday.

It was an interesting ride going through where the hurricane hit the hardest.   Some property is barely affected and others are destroyed.  The process seems to put all the debris on the side of the road where it is picked up and brought to central locations.   The road is clear of storm detritus,  but has a lot of things like shredded truck tires that you need to watch out for very carefully.

Overall,  business are open and the local people want the tourism activity that drives the local economy.

No to be forgotten is that this is a beautiful place.  There is a lot of traffic,  especially work trucks, but the shoulders are wide and cycling is wonderful.

We have 53 miles to go to the end of the trip.  I am very glad that I chose to continue the ride, but am looking forward to arriving in Key West after 9 weeks on the road (and of course home to Julie on Monday).

  1. I rode BubbaFest a couple years back. fully supported, Key Largo to Key West and back. Very, very beautiful area. We rode lots of the bike paths. Sometimes the roads were in better condition and they also had nice shoulders with room for bikes. Glad to see they working on recovery and that it is quickly happening. BubbaFest leaves from Key Largo again in early November. he usually takes about 150 riders for the trip. It should give some of the restaurants a boost.
